The birth of landscape architecture

In a previous article, we discussed the origins of landscape architecture, which dates back to the time when people were just beginning to understand their surroundings and believed in the superficial and magical qualities that came from natural sources. Nature was a primary source of all the good and evil that was happening to humanity. To evade the possible catastrophes associated with fear and admiration for unstoppable supernatural powers, people began building and creating various monuments, which have been preserved to this day.


One of the most recognized ancient practices that was based on energy flow and invisible forces is Feng Shui, which is a part of old Chinese metaphysics that aims to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment. To not jump from one era to another, it is better to stay on course.


Following the notes of Samuel Noah Kramer, the history begins at Sumer, which is a land where, between 2800 and 2500 B.C., where first human records were made. The Epic of Gilgamesh is the first one to tell us about the origins and creation of the first city, where Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk, dividing the settlement into three parts. One third was a city part, another was a garden, and the last one was farmland.
